“Years” is a modified record player that analyzes the growth rings on a cross section of a tree and translates the information into ghostly piano music (video). The device was created by German artist Bartholomäus Traubeck.

A tree’s year rings are analysed for their strength, thickness and rate of growth. This data serves as basis for a generative process that outputs piano music based on the year ring data. Those are analyzed for their thickness and growth rate and are then mapped to a scale which is again defined by the overall appeareance of the wood (ranging from dark to light and from strong texture to light texture). The foundation for the music is certainly found in the defined ruleset of programming and hardware setup, but the data acquired from every tree interprets this ruleset very differently.

Recently, I decided it was time to map out the circuits in our house since nothing is labeled in our breaker box. It only took an hour or two, and now I'll be more informed about what's what when we need to use our generator. I was almost done with the process when I realized that I wasn't keeping an eye on the outside lights by the entry doors. I really didn't want to start over for three lights, and I really started to wish I had another set of eyes to get this done quicker. That's when I thought of FaceTime...

Both my iPhone 4 and my MacBook Pro already had FaceTime installed, so I called my cell number from FaceTime on my MacBook Pro. They connected right up and I was set. Now, which device you use for which task is up to you, but for me it was easier to position the iPhone at the light I needed to see and carry the MacBook Pro to the breaker box. I didn't have any sort of tripod for the iPhone, and the windows nearest the lights were my best vantage point, so I just propped up the iPhone and headed for the breaker box. Then, I just flipped breakers until the light turned off.

Of course this will require that your WiFi is either on battery backup, or on a circuit that you aren't messing with. Aside from that, it worked out to be a quick way to find the right breaker.
